KDD 2013 Industry Practice Expo Talks
Practice Makes Perfect: Featuring Leading Industry Experts and a Provocative Panel Discussion at the KDD Industry Practice Expo
A lot has happened since our last blog post about the Industry Practice Expo (IPE) track at KDD 2013. We have finalized the program and are excited to feature prominent industry speakers, who have contributed to the design and implementation of successful “Big Data” analytics systems in a variety of domains.
Personalized medicine is rapidly becoming a very important field in healthcare. Dr. Eric Schadt from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai will discuss how a personalized cancer therapy program is revolutionizing oncology. This program involves DNA and RNA sequencing of a patient’s tumor and germline DNA and the projection of high-dimensional features exhttp://www.suite133.com/kdd/news/view/kdd-is-the-top-research-conference-in-the-field-by-all-measurestracted from these data onto predictive network models constructed by integrating large-scale, high dimensional data that exists for the patient’s cancer type.
“Big Data” has been used for over two decades to analyze security loopholes and identify impending threats to computer systems. Pure data mining approaches to cyber-security have historically given mixed results. Ari Gesher from Palantir and Raffael Marty from Pixlcloud will present two powerful, yet complementary approaches to tackling the ever increasing cyber security threats. Ari Gesher will present various case studies showing how a successful collaboration between human experts and machines can be leveraged to effectively fight cyber-crime. Raffael Marty will explain the use of data visualization with support from sophisticated algorithms and scalable-systems that has been successfully used in several computer security systems.
Targeting algorithms and systems have been extensively studied in the data mining community. Rayid Ghani will discuss effective approaches for targeting and the spread of influence that have been very successfully used across a variety of fields from electoral campaigns to programs in social good.
Democratizing the task of analyzing and drawing meaningful insights from any arbitrary data set is the holy grail of analytics. Most analytics tools require extensive human intervention and are beyond the reach of most people other than highly-skilled analysts. Chris Neumann of DataHero will explain how his company has been able to combine algorithms and user interface concepts to create intuitive solutions for potentially complex analytics problems.
Lastly, we are very excited about the first Industry Practice Expo panel discussion titled “Death of the expert? The rise of algorithms and decline of domain experts”. Jeremy Howard of Kaggle will moderate a panel of four experts, who will engage in a heated discussion on this provocative topic.
We look forward to welcoming all of you to the KDD 2013 Industry Practice Expo and are certain that you will enjoy a very engaging and insightful set of talks and discussions. Please check out the schedule and details of all our speakers at the KDD 2013 IPE website. See you in Chicago!
Best regards,
