Practice Makes Perfect: KDD Industry Practice Expo (IPE) track 2013

Practice Makes Perfect: For a third consecutive year, the KDD Industry Practice Expo (IPE) track brings together the leading data science practitioners

The Industry Practice Expo (IPE) track at KDD 2013 brings together leading industry and government practitioners who have been involved with the design, implementation and deployment of seminal, and proven applications of data mining and knowledge discovery in industry and government.  This track complements the already established Industry and Government track that focuses on peer reviewed publications.

We are excited to bring to you the third edition of the IPE track. The talks in the past two years were extremely well received and it was fascinating to follow the numerous discussions between the speakers and attendees during the breaks. We are working hard to live up to the high bar set by the previous speakers. While the full IPE schedule is coming together, here is a sneak peek at the exciting talks being planned.

Jeremy Howard, President and Chief Scientist of Kaggle, will focus on deep learning and describe how this special purpose technique in the areas of image and speech recognition has evolved into a general purpose machine learning tool with great results in several domains.  Representing a trend toward more automated approaches, deep learning provides a framework that moves away from the need for domain specific knowledge to get exceptional results.  This is possibly a very disruptive technology in the data mining and knowledge discovery space.

Many analysts, technologists, companies and start-ups working with large datasets rely on Hadoop as their large-scale data storage and processing platform of choice.  This year, the Industry Practice Expo is proud to have one of the founding members of the Yahoo! team that took Apache Hadoop from a 20-node prototype to a datacenter-scale production system.  Milind Bhandarkar chronicles the early days of Hadoop through to the current state of the Hadoop ecosystem, and looks at the future of this and other related technologies.

Oren Etzioni will focus on how data-mining and text-mining is leveraged to predict online shopping prices and generate product rankings to answer the three basic questions of what, where and when to buy?  Oren is the WRF Entrepreneurship Professor of Computer Science at the University of Washington and has founded three companies focused on increased transparency for shoppers -- Netbot (acquired by Excite) for comparison shopping, Farecast (acquired by Microsoft becoming the foundation for Bing Travel) advised travelers on when to buy their tickets, and Decide.com to minimize buyer's remorse.
Stay tuned as we roll out more of the exciting, ground-breaking industrial and government data mining and knowledge discovery work that will be presented at this year's Industry Practice Expo at KDD 2013! Register before June 30, to take advantage of the early bird registration discount for the conference.
